Ricky Sappleton and Emile Sinclair netted either side of the break to give Macclesfield the victory in a week that saw their manager Keith Alexander sadly pass away at the age of 53.
"It was Keith's family's wishes to continue with the game so we prepared as we saw fit," said Trewick. "I thought the Macclesfield supporters were terrific in respect for Keith and it seemed to inspire their players to work very hard in the first half and we didn't match that.
"It was a disappointing first-half performance from us, we didn't get close enough to them and compete. From our point of view we have conceded a sloppy goal but don't get me wrong he (Sappleton) found the corner of the net very well.
"But we shouldn't allow a right-footed player to turn inside in that position and strike with his right foot.
"Once you go one down it settled their nerves and increased the tension on us. We then gave away a poor goal in the second half and from then on was an uphill struggle."
